Annual Soloists’ Competition 2022
The annual Soloists’ Competition for 2022 was held this Wednesday in the Orchestra Room. On the back of last week’s heats, where over 70 students competed, we enjoyed an evening with 19 finalists across the 4 entry divisions. The range of instruments on display exhibited the breadth of the programme at Trinity and the talent of our boys. From string players, to wind, electric guitar and Marimba, the standard was very high.
Our adjudicator, Leigh Middenway, shared this view of the standard of playing. Leigh is a retired member of the Australian Chamber Orchestra, a chamber musician and a highly regarded teacher here in Sydney and interstate. Leigh had some difficulty in the final analysis selecting winners given the talent on display.
In the Junior Division, Leigh awarded a Special Mention to Ryan Nguyen (3A), with 1st Place being awarded to Kingsley Liu (3G) performing ‘A Stormy Coast by Carroll on Piano. In the Intermediate Division Christopher Xu(4C) received a Special Mention, and Adam Jeroncic (6S) was awarded 1st Place, for his rendering of ‘Ave Maria by Schubert. The Senior Division saw Mimo Kim (2R) rewarded with a Special Mention, whilst 1st place went to Christopher Montana (7He) performing Ravel’s ‘Piece En Forme De Habanera’. Finally, in the Advanced Division, which was hotly contested, there were 2 students rewarded with Special Mention: Christopher Chin (10He) on the Marimba with a transcription of Debussy’s ‘Doctor Gradus ad Parnassum’, and Elton Huang (10Ar) performing the 13th movement ‘vision noel’, from Messiaen’s 20 Visions of the Baby Jesus.
