Library News | Junior School

Kindergarten has been looking at the structure and function of different organisations for their Unit of Inquiry over the last few weeks of Term One.

During Library time, this has taken us on an adventure of looking at different houses, the materials used to make them, and the shapes they come in. Books from the Junior School Library that have helped facilitate this learning have been: The Three Little Pigs, An Architectural Tale by Steven Guarnaccia; Andrew Daddo’s Whatcha Building; Let’s Build a House by Mike Lucas;  Look UP!(Numbers in Architecture) by Anotnia Pesenti;  Home by Carson Ellis; and Coming Home to Country by Bronwyn Bancroft.

Boys in Kindergarten used finger puppets to retell the story of the Three Little Pigs with props of straw, sticks and bricks to add some concrete understanding to the structures that were used to make the houses in the story.

The State Library of NSW has some great resources for students when looking at homes from the past. Kindergarten have looked closely at some of the photos from their collection that show how the style of houses in Australia has changed over time. These photos help us to see that not all homes are the same, as they vary in structure and function.

We hope that the boys enjoy having some extra time to read some great books during the holiday break. It was encouraging to see many extra books being borrowed this week gearing up for the school holidays.
