Debating News | FED Debating Semi-Final
YEAR 7 FED B report – Newington College v Trinity
This debate was nerve wracking. The type of debate that made you stick to your seat. It was the semi-finals; we needed to win this debate to face MLC in the Grand Final. We didn’t have a good record either, the one time we had faced Newington before, we had lost.
Our team consisted of D. Sealey (7Sc) 1st, J. Chong (7Hi) 2nd, M. Licenblat (7Du) and A. Rabey (7He) but unfortunately A. Rabey (7He) was unwell on the day. This disadvantaged us from the start. The two teams, Trinity and Newington, got the privilege of choosing one topic out of a choice of three. After a coin flip, Newington’s first topic choice was chosen, “That the government should give high-school students an allowance” luckily enough, this topic was slightly one-sided, and Trinity got the better side. The negative. All we had to do was execute our arguments effectively.
We shut down the opponent’s arguments that were based on poverty, and we used arguments to show that the government could use money much more effectively and that teenagers could use the money irresponsibly.
At the end of the tense waiting for the adjudication, we came out in front, evened the scores with Newington and qualified for the Grand Final next week at Sydney Boys High.
