Year 1 Excursion to Taronga Zoo

This term in our Unit of Inquiry ‘Sharing the Planet’, Year One has been exploring the central idea “Humans make choices that have an impact on living things.” Throughout this unit we have been inquiring into the features of living things, their needs, and our responsibility. So naturally we went on an excursion to Taronga Zoo to further our inquiry and build a deeper understanding. Despite the rain we all had a great day and learnt many valuable things.

Here are a few excerpts from our writing, recounting our visit to the zoo.

“We saw a tortoise, lions, tigers, frogs, zebras, seals, reptiles, snakes, bush turkeys, penguins, elephants, birds, koalas and giraffes. The tortoise was so cute!” Andrew

“When we arrived at the zoo it was raining hard and we thought it might storm. We still wanted to see the animals. We were lucky to see giraffes and blue tongue lizards.” Arkie

“1T visited the zoo on Thursday. We went on the Sky Safari and saw a lot of animals. My favourite animal at the Zoo was the seals.” Christian

“We saw the map first and then we went deeper into the zoo. We saw a lot of animals and it was so much fun. We loved the zoo.” George

“My favourite part was the fish. We learnt that blue tongue lizards smell from their tongue.” Kiaan

“We saw bush turkeys walking around. My favourite part was the seals. We had fun.” Jaden

“I saw birds, mammals, reptiles and seals. My favourite part was the Sky Safari and the possum.” Jimmy

“The penguins and the seals were so cute. I learnt that seals could go out of the water. I felt so happy and had so much fun.” Noah

“We saw a zookeeper. The zookeeper was talking to us. We learnt about huntsman spiders and we saw frogs.” Waseem
