2022 Australian Age Swimming Championships

2022 Australian Age Swimming Championships

SA Aquatic & Leisure Centre 11-20/04/2022

The annual Australian Age Swimming Championships marks the pinnacle of domestic swimming and Team Trinity travelled to Adelaide with a strong ten schoolboys. The Championships span across seven days including heats and finals where the boys are tested both physically and mentally across the duration of the meet.

Trinity Grammar were among one of the top performing New South Wales teams, tallying five medals (4 Gold, 1 Bronze) and had swimmers participate in 14 Finals across the meet program.

Gold Medallists

Grayson Doig (8He) 14 Years 200m Medley 2:10.57
Hayden Hoang (10Ta) 15 Years 50m Backstroke 27.01
15 Years 100m Backstroke 57.82
15 Years 200m Backstroke 2:06.49

Bronze Medallists

Grayson Doig (8He)     14 Years 100m Butterfly 58.42

While the Championships meet accounted for many highs, there were a few particular moments to highlight including Hayden Hoang (10Ta) claiming all three National Titles across the 15 Years 50, 100 and 200m Backstroke events.

Grayson Doig (9He) claimed Gold in the 14 Years 200 Individual Medley in a school record breaking time of 2:10.57. The previous record had stood since 2007 by Kenneth To who then went on to represent Australia in the very same event. Grayson was then able to back up shortly later that evening to win Bronze in the 14 Years 100m Butterfly.

Jonathan Nam (10St), Joshua Jeung (8He), Gabriel Wilczak (12Ar) and Leopold Vo (9WH) performed spectacularly affording them the opportunity and challenge of racing both morning and evening by qualifying for finals.

It was also encouraging to see James Robertson (11Du), Luke Ghanem (9WJ), Mitchell Chen (11Ar) and Ryan Quinn (12St) competing at the Australian Age Championships for the first time, and excelling in the chosen events. Qualifying for the Australian Age Championships is a huge credit to their tenacity, commitment and long term dedication which has enabled them to progress down the competitive pathway.

The Australian Age Championships always provide a challenge in and out of the pool, and our Trinity Team not only managed but thrived under adversity. Flight cancellations, overturning disqualifications and racing in Swim-Offs for finals spots are a few of the obstacles faced, but an appreciation to our students, parents and coaching staff (Mr Benjamin Tuxford, Mr Andrew Aebi and Mr Calum Timms) has to be recognised for the way that these obstacles were overcome.

Yours in Swimming,

Calum Timms | Coach of Swimming
